YOGA TEACHERS TRAINING

London Yoga Teacher Training (LYTT)
Introductory Course 2012

London Yoga Teacher Training group invites applications for their new introductory course from serious yoga students wishing to develop their personal practice and explore yoga in more depth. The aim of the course is to provide a thorough grounding in the approach to yoga inspired by Vanda Scaravelli and Mary Stewart. Their teaching emphasises the relationship between gravity, breath and the spine. This approach to practice and teaching has produced a diverse community of highly individual yoga teachers, two of whom will be present at all sessions.

The course will consist of eight full day sessions taking place between January and May 2012 (see below for dates). The course will be lead by Lisa McRory and Cara Bowen and will encourage students to develop an intelligent and sensitive individual yoga practice. There will be an in-depth and exploratory approach to asana, with a solid foundation in breathing practices and pranayama. The course will include an introduction to functional anatomy by Peter Blackaby in a series of practical sessions. Neville Cregan will provide an introduction to yoga philosophy and meditation. Visiting yoga teachers Giovanni Felicioni, Christiane Kerr, Sarah Linsey and Amy Redler will bring their individual teaching styles to intensive asana classes. For further information about any of these teachers use the Teacher Search (hypertext link) facility. The course will encourage students and teachers to work together in a collaborative and discursive way, with an open exchange of ideas and approaches to practice.

The course will prepare students for the London Yoga Teacher Training Course commencing September 2012, should they wish to pursue their yoga studies. Led by Chloe Fremantle and Anne-Marie Zulkahari, the teacher training is fully accredited by the BWY.

COURSE HOURS:

Classes, lectures and tutorials are held monthly on Friday afternoons (sometimes a full day), all day Saturday, and occasionally Sunday. The course is divided into six terms. There is an additional 3 - 5 hours per week for self-study, homework and assignments.

Trainees receive:

  • Personal Supervision: from Chloe Fremantle, Anne-Marie Zulkahari and teaching staff.

  • Regular tutorials and assessments throughout the course: this aspect of the course is intended to offer encouragement, as well as an opportunity to further improve teaching skills. Self-assessment and self-reflective study is encouraged throughout the course.

  • Input from our experienced group of teachers, with their different styles and teaching.

  • Access to a mentor: This will be one of the senior YTTC tutors - each of whom will be given a small group of trainees to mentor. They will answer trainees' queries and concerns about their Yoga practice, teaching and Yoga studies throughout the course, and they will also act as a liaison between the YTTC directors and the trainee. It should be noted their role is strictly as that of a "Yoga Mentor" not that of a therapist!!

  • Ongoing Dialogue with weekly Yoga Teacher

  • All YTTC trainees must attend a regular yoga class as recognized by the London YTTC. The teacher will be asked to give regular feedback to the course directors and to offer support to their trainee student. Weekly class attendance will be recorded. The YTTC will try to help students find a suitable weekly Yoga teacher should it be necessary.

We encourage trainees to have a " buddy " during the course- someone who will collect information etc should one of them unavoidably be absent.

The YTTC also hopes to offer trainees involvement with a large group of other like-minded teachers and students.

  • During the course, there will regular homework and assignments, which must be handed in on time. These go towards the final assessment.

  • Final assessment - completion of all written work inclusive of two case studies and an essay. Practical exam, which is examined by an internal and external examiner.

  • Continuing professional development: Students have to attend post graduate workshops at least 3 times a year for 2 years following their YTTC completion.

The YTTC 2009-2010 course will closely follow the syllabus as outlined by Mary Stewart, Chloe Fremantle & colleagues on previous Yoga Teacher Training Courses. This approach has been well recognised in the past to be thorough, rewarding and interesting, and has produced many exceptional teachers.

British Wheel of Yoga accreditation: the YTTC is in the process of being accredited by the BWY. All trainees will be expected to join the BWY and abide by their code of conduct and ethics.

TOTAL COURSE FEE will be £4000.00

Trainees will be required to make an advance payment of a deposit of £1055, by which they secure their place on the YTTC (£1000)and their registration on the course to the BWY(£55), and then either monthly or quarterly payment methods will be set up.

All fees will be fully paid by all students by July 2010.

COURSE DIRECTORS

CHLOE FREMANTLE

Has practiced Yoga since 1978, learning first in Italy with Sandra Sabatini and Diane Long, and then in London with Mary Stewart. (Originally taught by Iyengar she then worked extensively with Vanda Scaravelli-)

Chloe began to teach in 1985 under Mary's guidance. Attending the first "Yoga Teachers Course" run by Mary Stewart, Sophy Hoare & John Stirk she qualified in 1991. She is now a member of the AIYP(Association of Independent Yoga Practitioners.)

'The Yoga method we work with, centres around the 3 principles of grounding the body, using the breath, and releasing into the asanas i.e. : by really understanding how to make use of gravity, we can slowly learn how to use predominantly only the muscles "necessary" for each asana. By discarding those that are surplus, we are able to become slowly quieter in the poses, thereby allowing a greater awareness of the use of the breath, and so being able to encourage the body to release further.'

As well as teaching regular weekly & private Yoga classes at her home, Chloe also organizes regular Yoga workshops in London. These workshops are now recognized as IST days for the BWY. The workshops led to Chloe setting up the 2004-2005 Yoga Teachers Training Course in London, which successfully helped produce 13 excellent new teachers. This course was inspired and laid down by Mary Stewart's teacher training courses.

Besides her weekly classes, workshops and the YTTC, Chloe also gives prenatal Yoga and breathing classes, with a particular emphasis on how Yoga can help deal with the last trimester of pregnancy, labour and birth: she holds sessions for "expectant" couples. Her other interest is in teaching children and teenagers. Currently, she teaches Yoga classes for students and staff at St.Paul's Girls School, London. She also teaches 3-4 Four Day Yoga courses each year, both daily and residential.

Chloe has had considerable experience with the remedial application of Yoga, & holds regular remedial workshops. She works with students with a large range of physical difficulties, and has seen the enormous benefits Yoga can bring to them. Most of all she appreciates Yoga for the wholly individual path it offers each and every one of us!

Books written by Chloe:
1999 the "Yoga Practise Handbook" published by Still Publishing, London, which she both wrote and mainly illustrated. She hopes it will act as an invaluable & easy-to-use book for the practising Yoga student and as an aid for teachers planning classes etc. It was re-edited in 2004.
2000 she illustrated "Breath : the essence of yoga" by Sandra Sabatini, published by Thorsens.
2004 she illustrated "Lo yoga nelle stagioni" by Sandra Sabatini, published by l'eta dell'Acquario

As well as being a Yoga teacher, Chloe is a practising artist, exhibiting regularly in the UK, in Europe and the USA . She is married with two teenage children.

ANNE-MARIE ZULKAHARI

Anne-Marie trained at Arts Educational Trust and completed all R.A.D examinations. Her career started off with the BBC children's television series 'Playaway', in which she featured as a dancer/actress. She went to New York in the seventies, dancing with leading choreographers, acting in off-Broadway plays, and working as a free-lance teacher and choreographer. She taught Ballet, Jazz, and Graham and Horton-based Contemporary Dance both with adults and children. An injury introduced her to Robert Fitzgerald and the Pilates Method in 1975. She went on to train and work with Fran Lehen. Her first Hatha yoga training was with Ginny Flowers at the NY Yoga Centre, back in the seventies. Other accomplishments were a pre-medical degree, Marymount Manhattan, NY, USA.

Returning to England in 1985, Anne-Marie worked with Alan Herdman for six years, also working in conjunction with the Remedial Dance Clinic. She has taught both Pilates and yoga workshops around the country including for Dance UK and was a consultant at the Royal Ballet School. Since then, she has been directing her own centre, Pilates and Yoga Movement. She has also diversified into other areas including appearing and consulting for children's television: the BBC's 'Teletubbies' and Channel 4's 'Investigators.' Both these programmes were showing the children doing Yoga. She specialises in teaching movement mechanics and adapting Pilates and Yoga to dancers, actors and to those recovering from injury. Anne-Marie's knowledge of yoga derives from thirty years of study with various teachers - in particular, Mary Stewart, with whom she studied and assisted, for three years. Her Yoga teaching has been mentioned in Good Housekeeping and Vogue. Her further studies include studying Patanjali's yoga sutras with , completing the Gyrotonic® certification and the City Lit Adult Education teaching certificate level one.

Anne-Marie is one of the founders of the PILATESfoundation UK Ltd, and sits on the Teachers' Training and examiners committees established to raise and maintain high standards of teaching. This involves setting guidelines for member studio teacher training studios and examining their candidates. Her principal contribution was the setting up of the PILATESfoundation teachers' training accreditation.

Her main drive throughout all aspects of her work is to teach each student adapting the breathing, exercises and asanas to suit their needs. Because of her extensive knowledge and understanding of the body acquired over the last 20 years whilst working with Physiotherapists and Osteopaths, she particularly enjoys working with remedial and rehabilitation clients.
